M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable (2000) came out before the current superhero craze went into effect. I thought it was low-key, but frankly, one of the best superhero origin movies ever made. I still do. In hindsight I wonder if wanting a sequel was a wise idea. It is quite possible the movie stands so well in my memory because there has been nothing brought forth to sully it. But whether it should be or not we have a sequel on the way. The folks over at inverse are saying his movie Split (2016) is a sequel to Unbreakable, which is patently absurd. The movie takes place in the same universe but that doesn’t make it a sequel by any stretch of the imagination, I think they need to clean their bong water over there.
At any rate, they’re reporting that M.Night is saying that his new film Glass is ‘A different kind of superhero movie’...all of this is based off of this tweet he posted yesterday:
The hashtag #comicbookthriller seems to have given them license to put all kinds of words in his mouth. The article goes on to tout how Unbreakable and Split reinterpreted the superhero genre and generally fellated M. Night for several paragraphs. There’s only two problems. Unbreakable came out before the superhero genre even took off and Split was not a superhero movie. And Captain America; The Winter Soldier can easily fall under the “Comic Book Thriller” category. The article’s author is a complete moron and we are going to now veer away from their false title and focus on the tweet itself. M. Night says they were “very, very gracious” in their reaction to the 12 minute screening. This could mean that they went wild and he is being modest…or the audience was quite reserved and he’s just glad they didn’t pelt him with tomatoes. The problem with Night is you are never really sure how it’s gonna go.
