Emma Stone to Return in Cruella Sequel

Even while Cruella was playing in theaters and on Disney Plus, there were already talks about a sequel. Now, BloodyDisgusting reports Academy Award winner Emma Stone will reprise her performance as Cruella de Vil. director Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Fright Night remake) will probably return as well.

Cruella is a live-action prequel to Disney’s 1961 animated feature film One Hundred and One Dalmatians. It tells the origin story of the monstrous Cruella de Vil, obsessed with wearing a fur coat out of puppies. Since she’s the protagonist now and this is a Disney film, writers considerably toned down her story and character. Stone plays her as a young, scrappy fashion designer looking for fame in London in the swinging sixties. The big bad of the film Baroness von Hellman was portrayed by two-time Academy Award winner Emma Thompson (Howards End, Sense and Sensibility).

Initially slated for a release on December 23, 2020, Disney delayed Cruella until May 28, 2021, due to the pandemic. Eventually, the film was simultaneously released both in movie theaters and on Disney Plus as Premium Access. With a production budget of somewhere between $100 and 200 million, Cruella went on to gross around $86 million domestically and another $136 million internationally – which is quite the success considering the state of the movie industry in the time of Covid-19.
