Netflix Acquires Rights to a New Will Smith Action Thriller

GeekTyrant reports Netflix just bought worldwide rights for the next action-thriller starring Will Smith, who requires no introduction. The film titled Fast & Loose was at the center of a major bidding war between companies. David Leitch, co-director of the first John Wick movie and director of Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2, will helm the project. Erich and Jon Hoeber, a screenwriting sibling duo that previously collaborated on movies like Battleship, Red, My Spy, and The Meg will provide the script for Fast & Loose.

According to the initial synopsis, the plot will revolve around a man – presumably portrayed by Smith – who wakes up in Mexico with amnesia. As he struggles to learn about his past, the man discovers he has been living parallel lives: as a crime lord and as an undercover CIA agent.

This is just the latest movie project acquired and financed by the streaming giant, always looking for more original content for its service. The only intriguing detail missing from this story is how much Netflix paid for the project. Lately, streaming services have been shelling obscene amounts of cash for new content. Netflix reportedly offered $400 million to Rian Johnson for two Knives Out sequels. NBCUniversal plans to invest the equivalent amount of money for three sequels to The Exorcist, at least two of which might premiere directly on its streaming service Peacock. And then there’s Amazon with its Lord of the Rings series that will cost up to half a billion dollars.
