Last weekend saw the second annual Comic-Con@Home, a virtual edition of the San Diego Comic-Con. Once again, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic forced organizers to take San Diego Comic-Con – the biggest most comic-book convention in the US – online. Since Disney and Marvel skipped the event, this opened up space for smaller franchises to promote their projects. And promote them they did!
SyFy and USA presented their upcoming TV series Chucky, based on Don Mancini’s classic horror franchise. The series will bring back Brad Dourif and Jennifer Tilly as voices of the murdering mannequin and his toy bride. Also returning will be actors Fiona Dourif (Curse of Chucky, Cult of Chucky), Christine Elise (Child’s Play 2), Alex Vincent (at least four Child’s Play movies), and Devon Sawa (Final Destination). Chucky will premiere on October 12.
Shudder announced an anthology series called Horror Noire. In 2019 the network released a documentary that explored the rich but frequently overlooked work of African-American horror filmmakers. Horror Noire the series will offer some of them an opportunity to tell new stories. It is coming out on October 14, 2021.
Finally, Amazon held a panel about its upcoming horror series I Know What You Did Last Summer. It is based on a 1997 slasher film that was, in turn, based on a 1973 novel by Lois Duncan. The eight-episode series is produced by the filmmaker James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring), with Sara Goodman as a showrunner. It will premiere this October.
