It looks like yet another 1980s pop culture property will get a revival in the new millennium. According to GeekTyrant, the Nacelle Company is looking to produce a new version of the old Saturday morning cartoon series SilverHawks. Nacelle Company is no stranger to 1980s childhood nostalgia. The same company is responsible for documentaries The Movies That Made Us, The Toys That Made Us, and the upcoming Disney Plus series Behind the Attraction.
For those unfamiliar with SilverHawks, here’s a quick rundown. Set in the distant future, the show follows a policeman Commander Stargazer and his team of heroic cyborg cops: Bluegrass, Steelheart, Steelwill, Quicksilver, and The Copper Kidd. Together, they fight alien mob boss Mon*Star and his sinister allies with names like Hardware, Melodia, Mo-Lec-U-Lar, and Mumbo-Jumbo. SilverHawks was developed by Rankin/Bass with animation by Japanese studio Pacific Animation Corporation. The show was heavily inspired by the previous joint project between two companies: the 1985 cartoon series ThunderCats. SilverHawks first aired in syndication in 1986 and ran for over sixty episodes.
1980s cartoon shows are a big part of the current nostalgia craze. Kevin Smith’s He-Man revival will premiere on Netflix soon, while Warner Bros. is currently developing a live-action ThunderCats film with Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs. Kong) as director.
