SlashFilm reports actress Michelle Yeoh joined the cast of Netflix’s Witcher prequel, titled The Witcher: Blood Origin. According to the article, she will portray an elven character called Cían, the last member of the tribe of nomadic sword-elves. The official description of her character says: “When a chance presents itself to retrieve a stolen sacred sword, taken from her fallen tribe by nefarious means, she launches herself into a deadly quest that will change the outcome of the Continent.”
Western audiences became aware of Michelle Yeoh in Ang Lee’s 2000 fantasy film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. However, Yeoh has been a star of Hong Kong, Taiwanese and Chinese martial arts movies years before Lee’s Academy Award-winning film. Since then, Yeoh also appeared in numerous Hollywood productions: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Star Trek: Discovery. She will also co-star in upcoming movies like Gunpowder Milkshake and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
As for The Witcher prequel, Netflix first announced Blood Origin back in July 2020. Set long before the events of the original show, this six-episode limited series will take place during the height of the elven civilization. It will tell a story about the Continent’s first witcher, played by Jodie Turner-Smith (Nightflyers, The Last Ship, True Blood). It’s worth remembering that, besides these two shows, Netflix is developing a feature-length animated film titled The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
The second season of The Witcher will premier later this year.
