Zack Snyder’s next project will be a science fiction adventure epic titled Rebel Moon, says The Hollywood Reporter. Besides directing it, he will also produce the film with his wife, Deborah. Synder will also co-write the script alongside Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead) and Kurt Johnstad (300), with whom he has collaborated in the past.
Rebel Moon takes inspiration from Star Wars movies as well as films by Akira Kurosawa. It takes place on a faraway planet on the edge of the galaxy, threatened by the armies of the space tyrant Belisarius. Desperate colonists send out a young woman to hire mercenaries from other worlds to help defend their home. If that sounds to you like the plot of Kurosawa’s classic Seven Samurai or Roger Corman’s schlocky 1980 Star Wars clone Battle Beyond the Stars, you’re most likely correct.
This spring, Netflix released Zack Snyder’s zombie horror/heist film Army of the Dead that reportedly promptly became one of the streaming service’s most popular movies. Last September, Snyder signed a deal with Netflix for a prequel movie and the anime series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. In addition, for several years, Snyder has been developing an animated series titled Ragnarok, inspired by Norse mythology.
