Apple TV+ just ordered a cartoon series based on an enormously popular webcomic Strange Planet. According to an article by SlashFilm, webcomic’s author Nathan W. Pyle will serve as one of the executive producers along with Dan Harmon, creator of TV shows Community and Rick and Morty. Amalia Levari, who worked as a writer on cartoons like Bravest Warriors and Over the Garden Wall, will be the showrunner. Apple Studios will produce Strange Planet alongside award-winning animation studio ShadowMachine, best known for Netflix’s adult animated series Bojack Horseman.
Pyle began Strange Planet in February 2019. In it, he examines ordinary situations and habits through a lens of an extraterrestrial society, allowing him to poke fun at the absurdities of everyday life. However, instead of leaning into cynicism and satire, Pyle prefers remaining empathic, even sentimental. This combination of sweetness and comical insight made Strange Planet incredibly popular all over the world. Its Instagram page has over six million followers. Thus far, there have been two books collecting Strange Planet comics, both of which ended on the New York Times bestseller list.
