From WKYC, People are saying that A24’s latest horror film Hereditary is really scary. The film marks the feature film debut of Ari Aster, a shorts director. It stars Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro. Not even A24 has a synopsis for the film so we only have snippets from the reviewers which lead us to believe the film centers on a family (The Graham’s) who head out to their estranged grandmother’s funeral…shenanigans ensue.
“HEREDITARY feels like you’re discovering M. Night Shyamalan’s THE SIXTH SENSE for the first time but with darker impulses and intentions. Grief, guilt, ghosts, and one monster performance by Toni Collette” — #Sundance2018
According to Aster, the script, written four years ago, was crafted during a time where his family was undergoing some sort of turmoil. That garners us an interesting peek into the mind of someone going through a rough patch, often the birth place of good work. A24 is responsible for films like The Witch (2016), It comes at Night (2017), Under The Skin (2014), Tusk (2014), Ex Machina (2015) and The Monster (2016). I’ve found most of the films on this list to be pretty decent…others, not so much.
I know, I know…you’re waiting for my usual cynicism, my caustic quips, my parting barbs. The best I can muster is that one should steer clear of hyperbole when at all possible, it tends to have a nasty aftertaste long after it leaves the lips.
