When it comes to animation, Netflix is not kidding around. During the last week’s event titled (somewhat embarrassingly) Geeked Week, the world’s biggest streaming service revealed several animated TV projects currently in development. While Castlevania just aired its final season, Powerhouse Animation – a studio behind the series – is already working on a spinoff. That show will take place during the French Revolution and follow Richter Belmont – a character who first appeared in the game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood.
After directing Army of the Dead, Zack Snyder is currently developing an animated TV series inspired by Norse mythology titled Twilight of the Gods. The voice cast he assembled includes Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead), Jamie Chung (Lovecraft Country), Kristopher Hivju (The Game of Thrones), Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049), John Noble (Fringe), and Peter Stormare (Castlevania).
Then there’s The Cuphead Show. It is based on the 2017 computer game Cuphead by Studio MDHR that was, in turn, inspired by the old Max Fleischer cartoons from the 1930s. Now the inspiration has run the full circle: the titular protagonist and his brother Mugman will appear in a Netflix cartoon series, alongside some of the game villains like the dastardly King Dice (voiced by Wayne Brady – How I Met Your Mother).
And finally, Netflix is also working on an animated series based on Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell games about the shadowy government operative Sam Fisher. At the moment, we don’t know much about the project, but Derek Kolstad (John Wick franchise) will write the show.
