GeekTyrant reports Disney ordered a sequel to Cruella, a live-action prequel/retelling of the 1961 animated feature film One Hundred and One Dalmatians. Director Craig Gillespie (Fright Night, I, Tonya) and screenwriter Tony McNamara (The Favourite) – both of which worked on the first film – will return for the sequel as well.
Cruella premiered two weeks ago in cinemas and on Disney Plus. Even though the movie was available for streaming, entertainment-hungry crowds nevertheless thronged to recently reopened cinemas. Cruella grossed $26,5 million during the Memorial Day weekend and another $11 million last weekend. In addition, it earned $43,4 million overseas. Ordinarily, these numbers wouldn’t have been impressive. However, the world is only beginning to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic that effectively closed most cinemas for a year or more. This led to several surprise hits at the box office – most of which are horror movies like A Quiet Place Part II, Spiral, and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.
Cruella re-imagines the story of the principal villain from One Hundred and One Dalmatians. Academy Award winner Emma Stone (La La Land) leads the cast featuring Emily Beecham (Hail, Caesar!), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (The Good Place), Mark Strong (Kingsman: The Secret Service), and Emma Thompson (Beauty and the Beast).
