An impressive list of names joined Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman graphic novel, reports GeekTyrant. Among them: Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) as Johanna Constantine, Stephen Fry (V for Vendetta) as Gilbert, Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Killing Eve) as Death, Razane Jammal (Paranormal) as Lyta Hall, Patton Oswalt (Space Cop) as a voice of the raven Matthew, Joely Richardson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as Ethel Cripps, and David Thewlis (Wonder Woman) as John Dee. They will join the cast that already includes the likes of Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) as Lucifer, Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, again) as Roderick Burgess, and Tom Sturridge (Velvet Buzzsaw) as Dream.
Sandman is based on cult graphic novels first published by DC Comics in 1989. Its story follows Morpheus, King of Dreams who, after decades of imprisonment, wants to correct the wrongs he committed during his long existence. On the way, visits heaven and hell and encounters all kind of supernatural beings.
There have been previous attempts to adapt Sandman into a live-action feature film, but these ended up stuck in development hell. Even this series – first announced in June 2019 – was on hold for after the pandemic broke out in March 2020. Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman) serves as showrunner. There is, as yet, no release date for the series.
