In 2011, director Joe Cornish and actor John Boyega first drew attention with a sci-fi action horror Attack the Block. Now, a decade later, AV Club reports that the sequel is in the works. Cornish will write and direct the film, while Boyega will return for the leading role and help produce the movie.
Set in the grim council estate in the UK, Attack the Block features Boyega as Moses, a charismatic leader of a group of teens. During Guy Fawkes Day, the gang realizes their neighborhood is under an attack by creepy extraterrestrial beasts. Instead of running away, they decide to take them on resorting to whatever weapons they can scrounge. Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who) and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) also appear in the film.
While Attack the Block underperformed at the box office, it was well-received by the reviewers and critics. It helped launch the career of Boyega, who went on to star in the new Star Wars trilogy, as well as in Pacific Rim: Uprising. Meanwhile, Cornish directed an adventure film The Kid Who Would Be King, and worked as a screenwriter on the first Ant-Man movie and Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.
