Adam Wingard in Talks to Direct Godzilla vs. Kong Sequel

SlashFilm reports director Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs. Kong) is currently in early talks with Legendary Pictures about filming a sequel that may be titled Son of Kong. Needless to say, Wingard is in high demand these days after directing the biggest blockbuster of the COVID-19 era. He’s already signed to direct a live-action ThunderCats movie, as well as a sequel to a 1997 John Woo action film Face/Off.

You can’t argue with success. While Godzilla vs. Kong may have been a silly popcorn movie, the latest installment in the MonsterVerse franchise also became a genuine blockbuster – no small feat right in the middle of the global pandemic that left so many movie theaters closed. With a budget somewhere between $150 million and $200 million, Godzilla vs. Kong earned almost $87 million domestically and another 320 million internationally. This is quite an accomplishment for Wingard, who began his career by directing a series of relatively low-budget, yet excellent horror thrillers like The Guest and You’re Next. Let’s just hope all this success allows him enough clout and leeway to focus once again on making smaller, more personal genre movies.
