Netflix just signed a deal with filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts for a live-action Mobile Suit Gundam movie, reports SlashFilm. Legendary Entertainment – the company behind the pandemic blockbuster Godzilla vs. Kong – will develop the film. Comic book writer Brian K. Vaughn (Ex Machina, Saga, Runaways, Y: The Last Man, and many others) will write the screenplay and serve as an executive producer.
For those who might be unfamiliar with it, Gundam is a Japanese media franchise that began in 1979 with the first Mobile Suit Gundam anime TV series. Its story is set in the future and follows teenagers piloting giant fighting robots. Over the last four decades, ithe original series gave rise to seemingly countless TV shows, movies, comic books, light novels, and video games exploring its universe. Now, Netflix want to expand not only into the Gundam franchise but also produce and stream more anime and anime-related content.
Jordan Vogt-Roberts is best known for directing the 2017 hit Kong: Skull Island – a second film in Legendary’s Monsterverse series. He launched his career directing episodes of TV shows like Death Valley and You’re the Worst before breaking out with his 2013 coming-of-age film The Kings of Summer.
