BloodyDisgusting reports Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs. Kong) has been hired by Warner Bros. to direct a feature film adaptation of the cartoon series ThunderCats. Wingard will co-write the script as well, alongside Simon Barrett. This creative duo previously collaborated on horror movies like The Guest and You’re Next. These low-budget films helped launch Wingard’s filmmaking career. It doesn’t hurt either that, in a week since it opened abroad, Godzilla vs. Kong already grossed over $123 million by bringing a spectacle to blockbuster-starved audiences.
For those unfamiliar with ThunderCats, this animated series follows a group of heroic cat-like people. Refugees from the dying planet of Thundera establish a colony in a strange new world. However, they are soon attacked again by the Mutants of Plun-Darr, led by the hideous Mumm-Ra. Created by Tobin Wolf, ThunderCats aired in syndication for four seasons between 1985 and 1989. Co-produced by Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment, the series was animated in Japan, with the American actors dubbing the characters. The show was followed by two revivals: the one in 2011 (also titled ThunderCats) and another in 2020 (titled ThunderCats Roar).
