Week-in-review: Weekend Box Office, Keanu Reeves’ BRZRKR, And Pierce Brosnan And Helen Mirren Join DC Extended Universe

Raya and the Last Dragon Continues to Rule

Raya and the Last Dragon continued to dominate US cinemas in its third weekend, reports Box Office Mojo. Disney’s CGI-animated fantasy adventure featuring voices by Awkwafina, Daniel Dae Kim, Sandra Oh, Kelly Marie Tran, and Benedict Wong earned $5,1 million last weekend, bringing its domestic gross up to $23,4 million.

In its fourth week in cinemas, Tom and Jerry is still going strong. After dropping from first place in its second week in movie theaters, this live-action/CGI-animated film has steadily held onto second place at the box office. Last weekend, it earned approximately $3,8 million, raising its US gross to $33,7 million. Somewhat similarly, dystopian sci-fi film Chaos Walking remained in third place for a third week now. So far, Doug Liman’s most recent film earned $9.7 million domestically, out of which $1,9 million was last weekend.

Sole newcomer among the top five highest-grossing movies of the last weekend is the British spy thriller The Courier. It is based on a real-life story about Greville Wynne, a engineer and a businessman who helped the British intelligence service penetrate the Soviet nuclear research program in the 1960s. The Courier features Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and Jessie Buckley (Chernobyl) in lead roles. In its inaugural weekend, it grossed over $1,8 million. And finally, in fifth place is again the unkillable The Croods: A New Age. After seventeen weeks in cinemas, this CGI-animated film grossed $626,000, bringing its total domestic earnings up to $55 million.

Keanu Reeves to Star in BRSRKR, Co-created by… Keanu Reeves!

BloodyDisgusting says Keanu Reeves will play the lead role in the live-action film based on a comic book BRSRKR, created by Matt Kindt and Reeves himself. Its story follows an immortal half-god, a warrior known only as B, who spends thousands of years fighting in wars. That’s a pretty lousy way to spend eternity if you ask us, but oh well. Anyway, B gets hired by the US government which offers him one thing he truly desires – the truth about his life and how to end it.

BRSRKR will be produced by Netflix because of course. It sounds like a B-movie geek-friendly fare this streaming giant has been churning out for the past several years, when not making prestigious, award-winning dramas like The Queen’s Gambit and The Crown. Even better, Netflix has plans for an animated TV series based on the same comic book, with Keanu Reeves voicing the lead character.

Thanks to the John Wick franchise, Keanu Reeves has made a comeback over the last several years. He appeared in internet memes (“NO, YOU’RE AWESOME!”), romantic comedies (Always Be My Maybe), the third Bill and Ted movie, and the computer game Cyberpunk 2077. For an actor who’s almost sixty years old, these are some varied and interesting projects. Good for him!

Pierce Brosnan Cast in Black Adam while Helen Mirren Joins the Shazam! Sequel

GeekTyrant reports Pierce Brosnan – former James Bond – has joined the cast of the upcoming Warner Bros. superhero movie Black Adam. According to the article, he will portray Doctor Fate, a DC superhero whose powers stem from the magical Helmet of Fate. Doctor Fate is also one of the creators of the Justice Society – a predecessor to the modern-day Justice League. This will be Brosnan’s first foray into superhero movies, although we could argue that playing Agent 007 should count as a superhero role. Anyway, Brosnan will join the cast that includes Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I Loved Before), Aldis Hodge (One Night in Miami), Quintessa Swindell (Trinkets), and the one and only Dwayne Johnson. Johnson has been championing Black Adam movie for years. He will be portraying the titular character – a former slave who uses newfound powers to liberate himself, becomes an anti-hero and build a kingdom.

Meanwhile, Helen Mirren, who played a retired assassin in RED movies, will portray a villain in the Shazam! sequel, titled Shazam: Fury of the Gods. Mirren will depict a character called Hespera, daughter of the Greek titan Atlas. Zachary Levi (Chuck) will return to the titular role of a superhero who is just an orphaned kid in a grown-up body. His brothers and sisters will return, too – both their child versions and their adult superhero alter egos. Swedish filmmaker David F. Sandberg – who directed the first film – will return as well.
