We are at least six months away from the premiere of the superhero limited series Hawkeye starring Vera Farmiga, Florence Pugh, Jeremy Renner, and Hailee Steinfeld. Now comes the news Marvel and Disney are already considering a spinoff focusing on the character Echo, played by Alaqua Cox. Echo is currently in early development. Etan and Emily Cohen will serve as lead writers and executive producers.
Echo, aka Maya Lopez, is a deaf Native American who can mimic other people’s movements – from dancers and musicians to martial artists. This makes her a formidable opponent in battle. Writer Joe Quesada and illustrator Dave Mack first created the character in 1999.
Over the last two years, Marvel began investing heavily in superhero TV shows. Considering its parent company Disney needs all the cool and original content it can get for its streaming platform Disney Plus, that’s hardly surprising. So far, Marvel shows have received mostly positive reactions. WandaVision generated quite a buzz during its recent run. Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiered just last week. Highly-anticipated limited series about Loki is coming out in June, while Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel will premiere late this year. Moon Knight and She-Hulk are coming out in 2022. And there has also been news about a show set in Wakanda and an adaptation of the classic Marvel comic book arc Secret Invasion.
