Paramount hired Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Shaun of the Dead) to film a remake of a 1987 dystopian action movie Running Man, says GeekTyrant. He will direct from a script by Michael Bacall (21 Jump Street), who previously collaborated with him on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Dark Phoenix) and Audrey Chon will produce the film.
Running Man is set in the near future when the world’s economy is in ruins, and the USA has become a fascist regime. In it, convicted criminals can choose to become contestants on a reality show. To gain freedom and a cash prize, these runners must evade contract killers.
Paul Michael Glaser — a TV veteran best known for starring in the TV series Starsky and Hutch — directed Running Man in 1987. The film featured Arnold Schwarzenegger and María Conchita Alonso (Predator 2) in lead roles, as well as Yaphet Kotto (Alien) and Jesse Ventura (Predator). Running Man is a very loose adaptation of an early novel by Stephen King, first published in 1982 under his occasional penname Richard Bachmann.
