Jumanji Becomes King of the Jungle
After three weeks in cinemas, Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle finally conquered the first place of the weekend box office. Box Office Mojo reports that this standalone sequel to a 1995 adventure movie Jumanji landed in the first place by earning $37.2 million. Its total gross worldwide now stands at around $530 million.
In the second place of the last weekend’s box office is the low-budget horror film Insidious: The Last Key. The fourth installment in the Insidious saga earned $29.5 million in its first weekend in cinemas. In third place is Rian Johnson’s divisive yet highly successful Star Wars: The Last Jedi with $23.7 million. Musical The Greatest Showman is in the fourth place with $13.7 million Finally, for a third week in a row, animated movie Ferdinand is still holding the fifth place, having earned $7.7 million.
Winners of the Golden Globe Awards
75th Annual Golden Globes ceremony was held last weekend in Beverly Hills, California, hosted by the talk-show host Seth Meyers. Even while the winners were announced and the wealthy and the famous cheered each other throughout the night, the ceremony couldn’t escape the shadow of the sex scandals in the movie industry that surfaced over the last six months.
One of the outstanding winners of the ceremony was the TV miniseries Big Little Lies which won awards for the best TV miniseries, best lead actress in a miniseries (Nicole Kidman), best supporting actress in a miniseries (Laura Dern) as well as the best supporting actor in a miniseries (Alexander Skarsgård). The Handmaid’s Tale won awards for the best TV drama and for Elisabeth Moss as the best actress in a TV drama. Written and directed by Martin McDonagh, humorous dark comedy Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won awards for its lead actress (Frances McDormand) and the supporting actor (Sam Rockwell) as well as the awards for the best drama and the best screenplay. Guillermo del Toro won the award for the best director for his movie The Shape Of Water.

Hulu Picks Runaways and Future Man For Second Season
Deadline reports that the streaming service Hulu (now owned by Disney) has ordered the second seasons of the shows Future Man and Marvel’s Runaways. Each of these will get a full, 13-episode season.
Future Man is a sci-fi sitcom following a video game-addicted slacker named Josh Futturman (Josh Hutcherson) who, after beating a challenging video game, meets its main characters Tiger (Eliza Coupe) and Wolf (Derek Wilson) – time travelers who need his help to change the future. Marvel’s The Runaways is an adaptation of a comic book by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. Its story follows a group of Californian teenagers who not only learn they have superpowers but also discover that their rich parents are super villains.
Snowpiercer TV Show Plows On
According to Hollywood Reporter, TV version of the sci-fi movie Snowpiercer is finally picking up steam – more than a year after TNT ordered the pilot. The TV show Snowpiercer will be produced by Josh Friedman who previously worked on the TV show Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles as well as on movies such as Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds. The show will feature Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly (Beautiful Mind) and Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs (Hamilton).
Snowpiercer is based on a 2013 post-apocalyptic sci-fi action film directed by Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho (The Host, Ookla) that was, in turn, based on a 1982 French comic book Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette. Set in a near future devastated by the new ice age aboard a nuclear-powered train, the movie features Chris Evans, Ed Harris, Tilda Swinton and John Hurt.
