Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong a sequel to the monster flicks Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Kong: Skull Island (2017), pits the legendary titans against one another.
Toruk's TakeThere are two types of people. Those who scramble together their peas, corn and mashed potatoes, and those who prefer to keep them separate until their inevitable intermingling in the gullet of acidic oblivion.
I like to keep them separate. I think they tastes better that way and it keeps things nice and orderly. I’ve always felt the same way about King Kong and Godzilla. I think they work better separately. They are both “good guys” so I knew even before seeing this trailer that the scenario put together to have them do battle would feel…beyond contrived. I’ve never been a fan of contrivances.
Kong: Skull Island was quite terrible and given the affinity he had for his little Island I knew that whatever reason they came up with to have him in the mainland, much less battling against Godzilla (who has shown in both of his recent films to be a benevolent defender of humans) wouldn’t pass the smell test.
Sure enough, the nonsense roars out of the gate with the filmmakers clearly choosing who they are going to screw over. Look, Kong has a soft spot for tiny Asian children (awww). Meanwhile, they have Godzilla smashing through a carrier (with people on board) which flies in the face of his actions in the previous flicks. Out of character, much?
You see, in order for their little movie to happen they had to make someone an asshole. Even if it turns out to be some wacked-out alien mind control making him do it, it still will be lame.
Looks like Godzilla drew the short straw. Looks like the audience did too.
