Warner Bros. Announces Plans for Wonder Woman 3

Just two days after the Christmas premiere of Wonder Woman 1984, Warner Bros. announced plans for a third Wonder Woman movie as well. According to the AVClub, the studio’s optimism is somewhat warranted since the film earned over $16 million in its inaugural weekend. This would have been considered a box office bomb in the pre-pandemic days of yore, but, well, here we are.

In comparison, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet opened to $9.4 million in its first weekend in the US cinemas. Furthermore, Wonder Woman 1984 came out a week earlier in cinemas overseas, where it already grossed over $68 million. And finally, the movie was also released on HBO Max, where – according to Toby Emmerich, CEO of the studio, the film was already watched by “nearly half” of HBO Max’s 12.6 million active users.

Wonder Woman 1984 is a sequel to the 2017 blockbuster Wonder Woman. Directed by Patty Jenkins and featuring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine in lead roles, that movie grossed over $822 million on a $150 million budget. While the first film takes place during World War One, the second one jumps to the not-so-distant 1980s and pits Wonder Woman against new threats, including Kristen Wiig (The Martian) as Barbara Minerva aka Cheetah and Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) as Max Lord.
