GeekTyrant reports Warner Bros. has just changed release dates for several of its upcoming movies. According to the article, Mortal Kombat will now come out on April 16th, 2021, instead of January 15. Family comedy Tom and Jerry will now come out one week earlier – on February 26, 2021, instead of March 5. Finally, a science-fiction film Reminiscence, initially slated for mid-April – has disappeared from the schedule entirely.
Based on a popular series of computer games dating back to the early 1990s, Mortal Kombat will be the directorial debut of Simon McQuoid with a script by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham. Tom and Jerry is a live-action/CGI-animated hybrid about the world’s most famous cat and mouse pair and also featuring Chloë Grace Moretz (The Amityville Horror, Carrie, Suspiria). As for Reminiscence, this is a film by Lisa Joy (Westworld) about a scientist (Hugh Jackman – Wolverine) who discovers a way to tap into memories of a woman he knew. The film also features Thandie Newton (Westworld) and Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout).
This news comes several weeks after WarnerMedia announced plans to release its 2021 catalog of films on streaming and in cinemas at the same time. In an industry already hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, this decision caused numerous angry responses by filmmakers and theater owners alike. However, this does admittedly solve the problem of seemingly endless changes in release schedules as movie studios keep trying to predict the future course of the pandemic.
