AVClub revealed Sylvester Stallone joined the cast of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. And why wouldn’t he? Stallone already appeared in Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 several years ago. Also, half of Hollywood seems to be in this one movie.
The premise of The Suicide Squad is as simple as it is brilliant: US government enlists captured super villains as disposable elite soldiers sent on suicide missions in exchange for a pardon or reduced prison sentence. The Suicide Squad first appeared in comic books back in 1959. A darker and edgier reboot followed in 1987. David Ayer wrote and directed a rather tepid 2016 movie, remembered mostly due to the performance of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Robbie will return for this movie as well as her co-stars Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. The cast also includes Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, John Cena as Peacemaker, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Michael Rooker as Savant, and Taika Waititi as the as-yet-unspecified character.
James Gunn is both writing and directing the movie set for a release on August 6, 2021. He’s also working on a limited series about John Cena’s Peacemaker. That show just added Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black), Chris Conrad (Patriot), Jennifer Holland (Brightburn), and Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) to its cast. That show will premiere on HBO Max late next year.
