Ubisoft has joined forces with the streaming giant Netflix to produce several TV projects based on insanely successful Assassin’s Creed computer game series. According to AVClub, two corporations are in talks about developing a live-action TV show, a cartoon series, and an anime (so technically two animated TV shows). Ubisoft Film & Television’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik will serve as executive producers while Netflix is currently searching for a showrunner for the live-action show. Netflix has a rightfully earned reputation for producing high-quality, glossy pulp like The Witcher, The Umbrella Academy, or Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Assassin’s Creed TV series seems to be in good hands.
First Assassin’s Creed came out in 2007, instantly becoming a best-selling title. Featuring an increasingly elaborate secret history pitting Assassins against Templars, that game was followed by a ton of sequels as well as by books and graphic novels. Considering how popular this series is, it’s astonishing that there was a 2016 live-action film adaptation so forgettable we were surprised to remember that, yeah, that actually exists. Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, True History of the Kelly Gang) directed the movie featuring such stars as Marion Cotillard (Inception), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges), Jeremy Irons (HBO’s Watchmen), Charlotte Rampling (Zardoz) and Michael K. Williams (Lovecraft Country). And yet, that film was lost in time, like tears in the rain.
