SlashFilm reports actor Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther, Creed) will produce a feature film about the superhero Static Shock via his production company Outlier Society. This news comes not long after DC Comics announced plans to relaunch Static Shock in February 2021 as a digital comic series as well as a more traditional graphic novel. Both of these projects will be written by Reginald Hudlin and feature art by Kyle Baker. Additionally, Hudlin will serve as one of the producers of the Static Shock movie.
Static first appeared in 1993 on pages of Milestone Comics. The character was created by the company’s founders Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, Dwayne McDuffie, and Derek T. Dingle. Static is an alter ego of a teenager Virgil Hawkins, who accidentally develops powers to manipulate and generate electricity. Even though Milestone Media canceled Static Shock comic book in the late 1990s, DC Comics acquired the rights for the character and co-produced an animated TV series in 2000. Static Shock aired for four seasons and 52 episodes on The WB (now The CW). Afterwards, Static appeared in comic books crossover events like Final Crisis and The New 52 and for a while became a member of Teen Titans.
