Tenet Still in the Lead
Box Office Mojo reports Tenet remained at the top of the weekend box office, grossing approximately $4,7 million. Even after three weeks in US cinemas, the results are relatively weak – $36,1 million domestically. As the country keeps struggling with the pandemic, cinemas are either closed or barely visited by the theatergoers worried about COVID-19. Abroad, Tenet fared somewhat better, bringing an additional $215 million. However, this experiment by Warner Bros. studio is looking increasingly like a failure – not necessarily for the studio, but definitely for the re-opened US cinemas. Meanwhile, Disney’s decision to release Mulan digitally seems to have paid off handsomely.
In the second place at last weekend’s box office is once more The New Mutants with $1,8 million. Josh Boone’s superhero film features Alice Braga (Elysium, I Am Legend, Predators), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Blu Hunt (The Originals), Anya Taylor-Joy (Split, Glass), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), and Henry Zaga (Teen Wolf). So far, The New Mutants has grossed a bit over $35 million worldwide. In the third place with $1,4 million is this week’s lone newcomer – Infidel. This political thriller features Jim Caviezel (Person of Interest) and Claudia Karvan (Daybreakers). Road rage thriller Unhinged dropped from the third to the fourth place since the last week, grossing $1,3 million. Its current domestic gross is almost $15,6 million, with an additional $12 million from overseas. And in the fifth place of the weekend box office is the romantic comedy The Broken Hearts Gallery with $802,000 and a combined gross of $2,9 million at the time of this writing.
Winners of the 72nd Primetime Emmys
The 2020 Primetime Emmy award ceremony was an odd affair. Its host Jimmy Kimmel presented the awards in front of an empty hall. Nominees and winners used live feeds to appear on stage. It was a somewhat eerie look into a brave new world of social distancing.
And yet, there was excitement as well as viewers waited for the whole thing to fall apart. That it didn’t is an encouraging sign for similar award ceremonies in the future. Also, since last year’s award-hoarders like Game of Thrones and Veep weren’t here anymore, the award ceremony was a bit more unpredictable.
Nominations for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on July 28, 2020, by Laverne Cox (Orange Is the New Black), Josh Gad (Beauty and the Beast), Leslie Jones (Ghostbusters), and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black, Perry Mason). Damon Lindelof’s superhero limited series Watchmen led with eleven nominations. Satirical comedy-drama Succession followed with ten nominations while crime drama Ozark had nine.
Schitt’s Creek was the evening’s sensation, scoring seven awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. The show’s main cast all received awards as well: Eugene Levy (Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series), Catherine O’Hara (Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series), Daniel Levy (Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series), and Annie Murphy (Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series). This is an unparalleled achievement for any sitcom in the history of Emmys.
Watchmen won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie (for Regina King), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie (for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special (for Damon Lindelof), and an Outstanding Limited Series award.
Succession won four awards, including Outstanding Lead Actor In a Drama Series (for Jeremy Strong), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (for Nicholas Braun), and the Outstanding Drama Series.

Disney Postpones Black Widow, Death on the Nile, West Side Story, And Others
Last week, we speculated about Disney postponing the release of Black Widow yet again. Now, GeekTyrant confirms it: Mouse House has pushed the release date of Marvel’s next blockbuster for full six months – from November 6, 2020, until May 7, 2021. Consequently, release dates for other Phase 4 Marvel movies were changed as well. The studio pushed Eternals from February 12, 2021, to November 5, 2021. Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is presently coming out on July 9, 2021, instead of May 7, 2021.
But, as they say in infomercials, that’s not all! Disney executives postponed Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story for a full year – from December 18, 2020, to December 10, 2021. Meanwhile, star-studded murder mystery Death on the Nile was pushed from October 23, 2020, to December 18, 2020. But, at this point, does anyone believe it will come out in 2020? Honestly, with the way the pandemic is going, postponing any release for a full year may have been a smarter choice.
A lone exception among all these changes and postponements is Pixar’s latest CGI-animated family adventure Soul. Its release date remains November 20, 2020. But this is hardly surprising since Disney has reportedly been considering releasing it as VOD instead in cinemas. Considering the apparent success of the VOD distribution of Mulan, this looks increasingly likely.
