A new day brings another new collaboration between Netflix and Ubisoft. Variety says the streaming giant is working to adapt Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell games into an anime TV series. Derek Kolstad, best known for working as a screenwriter on John Wick movies, will serve as its writer and executive producer. Netflix already ordered two-seasons of the Splinter Cell anime, with eight episodes each.
First released by Ubisoft in 2002, Splinter Cell follows an elite NSA operative Sam Fisher (voiced in the game by Michael Ironside) as he undertakes spy missions all over the world. The game emphasizes the use of stealth instead of brute force. Splinter Cell was a huge commercial hit, leading to six sequels and half a dozen tie-in novels released over 11 years.
At the moment, Kolstad is part of the writing team working on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier limited series. But he seems to be the go-to guy in Hollywood for video game adaptations – small wonder considering the wonderful video-gameness of the John Wick franchise. In 2017, Empire reported Kolstad was working on a TV show based on Hitman – another stealth action game series. Two years later, Constantin Film hired Kolstad to help adapt 3rd person shooter Just Cause into a feature film.
