During the last weekend’s event Comic-Con@Home, Amazon Prime held a panel about its upcoming conspiracy thriller series Utopia. Created and executive produced by the best-selling writer and screenwriter Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Sharp Objects, Widows), Utopia tells a story about a group of comic book fans realizing an underground graphic novel The Utopia Experiments predicted future events. While searching for an unpublished manuscript of the sequel, they find themselves chased by assassins.
Both a thriller and a very dark comedy, Utopia was initially created in 2013 by Dennis Kelly and aired on Channel 4 in Great Britain. While the show itself wasn’t based on a graphic novel, it not only used one as a central plot point but was also influenced by the heavily stylized comic book art. Flynn wanted to produce a US-remake of Utopia for almost a decade now. While HBO was interested at first, the project eventually secured a home on Amazon Prime. The cast of the remake includes, among others, John Cusack (High Fidelity), Christopher Denham (Argo), Sasha Lane (American Honey), Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day), and Rainn Wilson (The Office). Utopia will premiere this fall on Amazon Prime.
