On Friday, Warner Bros. announced it would be postponing releases of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi thriller Tenet and Patty Jenkins’ superhero sequel Wonder Woman 1984. This led to the most recent round of reshuffling of release dates, both by Warner Bros. and others.
Throughout the weekend, Warner Bros. revealed it would be postponing Matrix 4 from May 21, 2021, release to Spring 2022. Instead, its release date belongs to Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong. That film was initially scheduled for May 2020. It was first shifted to March 2020 and then pushed to November of the same year. Now it’s being pushed once again. Simultaneously, Robert Zemeckis’ remake of The Witches has been pulled from the release schedule altogether.
In response to this news, other studios began changing their release schedule as well. Back in March, the latest James Bond film No Time to Die was one of the first movie casualties of the global pandemic. Slated for a release on April 10, MGM and Universal wisely chose to shift it to November 25. Now they’re planning to release it five days earlier – on November 20. Meanwhile, executives at United Artists Releasing decided they would push up the release date of Bill & Ted Face the Music from August 21, 2020, to August 14, 2020.
We are still waiting for inevitable reactions by major studios like Disney and Sony. However, there’s no doubt there’s more reshuffling ahead. With the way things are going, all these unreleased movies are beginning to crowd the next year. From here, the state of the entertainment industry can only grow increasingly chaotic.
