Scott Derrickson To Direct a Labyrinth Sequel

Horror filmmaker Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, Sinister, Exorcism of Emily Rose) has just signed on with ThreeStar Pictures to direct a sequel to Jim Henson’s 1986 musical fantasy Labyrinth. Maggie Levin, who wrote and directed the episode My Valentine for Hulu’s anthology horror series Into the Dark, will pen the script.

Currently, we know extremely little about this project. There are no details regarding its plot, casting or production. In December, Derrickson was still busy with the pre-production work on Marvel’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Early this year he left the production, citing “creative differences.” While Derrickson previously talked about plans to film an original horror movie, TriStar Pictures came with a more attractive offer.

Jim Henson’s Labyrinth is a dark fantasy film featuring Jennifer Connelly (Dark City, The Rocketeer) as teenager named Sarah caught in sinister machinations of the Goblin King Jareth (David Bowie). This being a Jim Henson movie, there are amazing-looking puppets. First released in 1986, Labyrinth failed at the box office, grossing around $13 million – a bit over half of its budget. And yet, as with Henson’s Dark Crystal, over the years Labyrinth became a cult classic and is nowadays looked upon with fondness and nostalgia.
