Last week, filmmaker Zack Snyder announced HBO Max would release his version of the superhero blockbuster Justice League sometime next year. Since then, new details about this project keep coming. Ben Affleck expressed his support for the project.
Several months ago, Snyder presented his version of the film to executives from Warner Bros., HBO Max, and DC. He outlined a plan to bring back the original post-production crew to add and finish the visual effects as well as cut and score the new version of the film. While the executives were interested, they refused to finance the filming of additional scenes with the original cast. Instead, Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, and others will merely record additional dialogue. Snyder’s version of Justice League may end up as a four-hour movie or, possibly, as a six-part miniseries. In either case, the studio agreed to invest an additional $20 – 30 million for the project.
While Snyder’s movies Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice were box office hits, his version of famous DC superheroes proved divisive among the comic book fans. However, none of it mattered when Snyder left the filming of Justice League in 2017 due to a family tragedy. Warner Bros. called in Joss Whedon to complete the film, with mixed results. Ever since the vocal fan base has been clamoring to see the so-called Snyder cut of the film. Now it looks like they’ll get their chance. Let’s hope that the version lives up to expectations.
