Last week, Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood, Justified) was cast in the second season of The Mandalorian in an undisclosed role. This week, SlashFilm reported he would play Cobb Vanth, a self-appointed sheriff of a Tatooine settlement called Freetown. Vanth scavenged a set of Mandalorian armor from the wreckage of Jabba the Hutt’s sail barge after the events in Return of the Jedi. Essentially, even though Olyphant won’t be playing Boba Fett – that role will go to Temuera Morrison – he will nevertheless wear his iconic armor.
Cobb Vanth first appeared several years ago in Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath trilogy of Star Wars novels. His inclusion in the show maintains the trend of introducing minor characters from other Star Wars properties to The Mandalorian. Just recently we reported how the series cast Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) as Bo-Katan Kryze – a character she previously voiced in animated TV shows The Clone Wars and Rebels. Similarly, Rosario Dawson was cast as Ahsoka Tano, a fan-favorite from Star Wars cartoons.
The shooting of the season two of The Mandalorian ended this February, meaning the show’s production won’t be delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. The second season is currently in post-production and will air this fall.
