In a recent video interview with Collider, veteran film producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Armageddon, Bad Boys, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Rock, Top Gun, and many, many others) not only confirmed National Treasure 3 is in the scripting process but also revealed he’s developing a National Treasure TV series for Disney+. According to him, the show would depict similar stories as the movies featuring a younger cast. While we don’t know will Disney pick up the series, its mix of history and family-friendly adventure would make it an excellent fit for its streaming service.
First released in 2005, National Treasure is a family adventure film following historian Benjamin Franklin Gates (played by the one and only Nicolas Cage) as he searches for a treasure trove hidden by the Founding Fathers of the United States. Mixing Indiana Jones with Da Vinci Code, the film was a commercial success, grossing 347,5 million on a $100 million budget. Its director Jon Turtletaub (Cool Runnings, The Meg, While You Were Sleeping) helmed the sequel as well. Released in 2007, National Treasure: Book of Secrets takes Gates on a globe-trotting adventure as he kidnaps the President of the USA. Sure, why not. Book of Secrets was even more successful, earning 457,4 million on a $130 million production cost. Turtletaub is currently working on National Treasure 3 with a screenplay by Chris Bremner, who penned the script for the recent action-comedy Bad Boys for Life.
