HBO Max announced three new TV shows by J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath’s Bad Robot Productions. Overlook is a horror show loosely inspired by Stephen King’s The Shining. Justice League Dark is a superhero series about a DC Comics’ team of occult-powered characters. Finally, there’s Abrams’ original TV show called Duster. These are the first shows by Bad Robot after the company signed a deal with WarnerMedia last autumn.
TV series Overlook is set in the haunted hotel from King’s 1977 bestselling novel The Shining. Its concept sounds similar to Hulu’s horror-thriller series Castle Rock. That show mixed characters and plots from various King stories to a great effect. Deadline adds Castle Rock co-creator Dustin Thomason and co-executive producer Scott Brown might work on Overlook as well.
Writer Peter Milligan and the artist Mikel Janín developed Justice League Dark in 2011. Primarily dealing with supernatural threats, the team includes DC Comics characters like John Constantine, Zatanna, Shade, the Changing Man, and Swamp Thing. At the moment, we know barely anything about this project. As for Duster, this is a crime drama series co-written by Abrams and LaToya Morgan (The Walking Dead). Set in the American Southwest in the 1970s, it revolves around a getaway driver working for a growing crime syndicate.
