Variety says Disney did serious reshuffling of its upcoming blockbusters. Its first casualty: Mulan. The live-action version of Disney’s 1998 animated film premiered on March 9. But then coronavirus pandemic halted its worldwide release. According to the article, this adventure epic is coming out on July 24 instead. This slot formerly belonged to another Disney’s adventure film – Jungle Cruise, starring Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow) and Dwayne Johnson (Jumanji: The Next Level). Now, Jungle Cruise won’t see theaters until June 20th, 2021.
Marvel Studios set its Black Widow movie for a release on May 1. But now, the studio had to push the film to November 6. Since that slot was previously reserved for The Eternals, this caused a domino effect of release date changes for upcoming Marvel movies. The Eternals will premiere on February 12th, 2021, pushing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to May 7th, 2021. This, in turn, pushed Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness to November 5th, 2021. Thor: Love and Thunder won’t come out before February 2022.
As for other Disney titles, Ryan Reynolds’s Free Guy will premiere on December 11 instead of August 3rd. Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch shifted from August 24th, 2020 to October 16th, 2020. Pixar’s Soul is still coming out on June 19th while Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of West Side Story remains set for December 18th. The New Mutants, Woman in the Window, Antlers, and The Personal History of David Copperfield still have no release dates. And finally, Disney’s feature film adaptation of Artemis Fowl will come straight to Disney+, skipping movie theatres altogether.
