Ryan Reynolds (of the Deadpool fame and Green Lantern infamy) is in talks to star in and produce a live-action adaptation of the 1980s video game Dragon’s Lair, says The Hollywood Reporter. According to the article, Netflix acquired the rights to the game after almost a year of negotiations.
So what is Dragon’s Lair? In this video game fantasy epic, the player controls heroic knight Dirk the Daring on his quest to rescue the surprisingly sexy Princess Daphne from the evil dragon Singe. But there are many perils ahead and player’s mistakes lead to comically cartoonish scenes of poor Dirk dying. Dragon’s Lair first came out in 1983 and instantly gained attention due to its incredible animations that were years ahead of anything else in the video game market. They were meticulously hand-drawn by Don Bluth, who would later direct animated films like An American Tail and All Dogs Go to Heaven. The game used LaserDisc technology to store its animations. Dragon’s Lair II: Time Warp followed in 1991 but failed to replicate the original’s success due to poorly implemented controls and limited interactivity.
Producers of the Dragon’s Tail live-action feature film include both Reynolds and Bluth. Dan and Kevin Hageman (The Lego Movie, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) will write the script.
